Liza Soberano confirms breakup with Enrique Gil after nearly three years

Actress Liza Soberano revealed that she had once hoped to tie the knot with her first love, Enrique Gil, following the announcement of their breakup.

Actress Liza Soberano revealed that she had once hoped to tie the knot with her first love, Enrique Gil, following the announcement of their breakup.

The showbiz personality appeared on Sarah Bahbah‘s “Can I Come In,” a podcast-documentary that explores love, heartbreak, trauma, prejudice and the complexities of being a woman.

In its episode uploaded on YouTube on Thursday, August 14, Liza confirmed speculations that she and Enrique had already broken up “almost three years” ago, confirming Ogie Diaz‘s May 2023 claim about their separation.

“Yeah, I’ve been honestly itching to tell people this because I haven’t been very truthful. Quen hasn’t been very truthful. Quen and I broke up,” she shared.

“But yeah, we’ve been broken up for almost three years now. And the reason, well, originally the reason why we haven’t said anything about it is because Enrique, or Quen, asked me not to say anything about it first,” the actress continued.

“And I think it, I don’t want to speak for him, but I think it was coming from a place of not wanting it to be real. And at the same time, you know, I agreed to that because I also didn’t want it to be real,” she said.

The actress also admitted that there were “already signs” she was “unhappy” with their relationship a year before they broke up.

Liza’s revelation comes more than two weeks after her former boyfriend allegedly left an “I love you” on one of her TikTok posts and reacted with heart and fire emojis on her Instagram content. In the interview, she also revealed that she had hoped to marry Enrique, whom Liza Soberano confirms breakup with Enrique Gil after nearly three years described as her “real first boyfriend” and “first love.”

“We were already at that point, almost eight years together, and I was genuinely expecting us to get married, like, soon,” the actress shared amid revelations of their breakup.

Liza also said that she had already told herself to accept “certain things about him” that she was not okay with, thinking they would end up together for life.

“You win some, you lose some. You have to deal with the good and the bad,” she shared.

Liza and Enrique began dating in 2014 but only made their relationship public in 2019.

In the interview, Liza shared that their feelings for each other developed even before they were paired as an onscreen love team, noting that Enrique had “specifically” requested to work with her.

With both sharing the same manager, meeting and eventually working together became inevitable. In Sarah’s interview, Liza revealed that their breakup “was really good” and that she would “just see good moments” whenever she looked back on their time together.

“I carry a lot of guilt for not being the one [who]held on, because that’s what my fans wanted to do. But also, I needed to find myself and grow, too,” she said.

“And there were things that I knew that I shouldn’t tolerate for the people that look up to me, for the younger me, and also, for my future children. And that’s not to say that he’s a bad person. He didn’t do anything bad,” the actress added.

“Nothing bad happened. Our breakup was really good. It was just, we weren’t a match anymore,” she said.

Liza and Enrique was one of ABS-CBN’s most popular love teams before who have headlined several TV series and movies like “Forevermore,” “Alone/Together,” “Dolce Amore,” “My Ex and Whys,” “Everyday I Love You,” “Just The Way You Are,” “Bagani,” and “Make It With You.”
